From Out of a Cloud

From Out of a Cloud

All nine of the planets in our solar system follow elliptical orbits around the sun. Just as important, they all lie in approximately the same plane.

Because of this, many scientists conclude that the sun and its planets were formed simultaneously out of a cloud of cosmic gas and dust. Scientists are quite sure that if the planets did not come into existence thus, they would circle in different directions along their individual planes, like moths fluttering around a candle, each in its own orbit.
