Our Fascinating Earth

In the Interest of Science

Many fur trappers believe that a skunk cannot eject its scent with its feet dangling in midair. Although this opinion has been around for a long time, no one appears to have tested its validity until recently.

A dedicated scientist from a leading university decided that it was time to prove or disprove the theory, so he experimented with a live skunk. He certainly disproved the old trappers' tales when he held the skunk by the tail in the manner prescribed; he received the full discharge of scent directly in his face! He simultaneously proved the skunk's tail isn't essential in scattering scent.
