How Custer Almost Missed His Massacre

About a decade before the Battle of Little Bighorn, General George Armstrong Custer, while hunting bison on the Great Plains, was dismayed to see a large bull turn and charge his horse. The general must have panicked, because he accidentally discharged his gun, shooting his horse through the head and killing the unfortunate mount instantly. Custer, who was actually a colonel at the time, was rather unceremoniously dumped to the ground. The bison must have thought this to be inappropriate behavior for a prospective victim, because he dropped his attack, turned, and walked away.
